Reducing the stiffness and increasing the strength of the muscles that are involved in the movement of the hip can increase mobility, improve function and reduce pain. Improving the flexibility of the muscles around the hips can also reduce the pain and inflammation from bursitis. If the exercises work well enough you may not need a hip replacement, what have you got to lose?
If your osteoarthritis is so bad that you still need a hip replacement, then hip exercises are still what you need to do. This is where we introduce the term ‘prehabilitation’. If you are having a hip replacement then the best thing you can do to help your recovery is to strengthen the muscles of the legs and hips.
